Accelerating the Drive Towards Sustainable Electric Mobility
6 What’s the difference between a gasoline hybrid, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) electric vehicle and a battery electric vehicle (BEV)?
A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) has a battery and electric motor to drive the wheels.
A Gasoline Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) has both a gasoline engine and electric motor working together to drive the wheels.
A Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) has a battery, an electric motor, and a gasoline engine that work together at different speeds to drive the wheels. First the battery and electric motor will start to drive the wheels, but once the battery is empty, or at higher speeds, the gasoline engine will take over.
7How much does it cost to purchase, fuel and maintain each type of electric vehicle?
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) vary greatly in purchase price and range under full electric power. While BEVs tend to have a higher purchase price than similar gasoline vehicles and HEVs, given the reduced number of moving parts in BEVs, and the fact that BEVs rely exclusively on batteries to power their motors, this type of electric vehicle tends to have the lowest maintenance cost and a longest range on a single charge compared to PHEVs, with a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) over the life of the vehicle. BEVs that are heavier with larger the battery packs, tend to be less efficient and have a higher TCO than lighter BEVs with smaller battery packs.
72. Which kind of electric vehicle will provide the most cost savings and the lowest total cost of ownership over its useful life?
Battery electric vehicles will have the most cost savings. The total cost of ownership is significantly less than both PHEV an HEV
8 Where can a BEV or PHEV be charged?
BEV or PHEV can be charged at home on a 110v outlet or 220v outlet. In public a BEV can be charged at JPS Charge n Go DC-fast charger location or Evergo Jamaica DC-fast charger location.
9 How much does it cost to charge an EV?
*Charging an EV using solar power can significantly reduce the cost of charging given the lower levelized cost of renewable power over time and the fact that EV owners with solar PV installations have typically already invested in that sunken cost and require little additional investment to use the solar power to charge their vehicle when they have excess generation available.
